Green tea contains oils, vitamins, minerals, and caffeine, but the primary constituents of interest are the polyphenols, particularly the Catechin called EpigallocatechinGallate (EGCG). These polyphenols are believed to be responsible for most of green tea's role in promoting good health.

  • A natural antioxidant
  • May help weight loss
  • May help lower cholesterol
  • Promotes good overall health

What is Green Tea?

Green tea is made solely with the leaves of Camellia Sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing. Over the last few decades green tea has been subjected to many scientific and medical studies to determine the extent of its long-purported health benefits, with some evidence suggesting that regular green tea drinkers may have a lower risk of developing heart disease and certain types of cancer.

Although green tea does not raise the metabolic rate enough to produce immediate weight loss, a green tea extract containing polyphenols and caffeine has been shown to induce thermogenesis and stimulate fat oxidation, boosting the metabolic rate 4% without increasing the heart rate.

Why take Green Tea Extract?

The potent antioxidant properties within Green Tea suggest that it may have positive effects upon cardiovascular health. This is due to the polyphenols (antioxidants that stabilise free radicals within the body) which help to reduce cholesterol absorption & plasma triglycerides, as well as having an anti-inflammatory effect upon the vessel walls. Arterial inflammation is one of the major causes of arterial hardening and heart disease.

Take Green Tea Extract if you want:

  • To lower cholesterol levels as the polyphenols may help to decrease the absorption of cholesterol.
  • A natural aid to weight loss as the polyphenols may help with the digestion of fat.

How Green Tea works. The science behind the secret…

Green Tea is derived from the same plant as black tea, but is treated differently. Both types are made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, but black tea is fermented and this process removes some of the beneficial qualities of the tea by reducing its polyphenol content.

Polyphenols are antioxidants that stabilise free radicals within the body which could lead to damaging cells and it is the polyphenols within Green Tea that have been associated with its cardio-protective effects and the reduction of inflammation of blood vessel walls.

Recent Studies

Green Tea possess heart health properties

A study conducted by Tosca L. Zern et al titled 'Cardioprotective Effects of Dietary Polyphenols' published in the Journal of Nutrition 2005 found that in addition to reducing cholesterol absorption, polyphenols reduce plasma triglycerides and have anti-inflammatory effects upon blood vessels.

A 2010 review by Basu et al in the "Journal of the American College of Nutrition" titled 'Green tea supplementation affects body weight, lipids, and lipid peroxidation in obese subjects with metabolic syndrome' reports that green tea provides beneficial effects to people who suffer from metabolic syndrome - a group of traits that include abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, high blood pressure and abnormal blood lipids. Metabolic syndrome has been demonstrated as one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease, and remedies that help improve this syndrome have been shown to lessen the risk for heart disease.

The role of LDL cholesterol in arterial inflammation and atherosclerosis is well known. Reducing your LDL level is one of the most suggested therapies for people at risk for heart disease, as well as those who already have it. A 2009 review by McGowan et al in the "Current Atherosclerosis Reports" titled 'Nutritional supplements and serum lipids: does anything work?' suggested that green tea catechins may lower LDL, and a 2010 study in the "Journal of Applied Physiology" titled 'EGCG protects against oxidized LDL-induced endothelial dysfunction by inhibiting LOX-1-mediated signaling' by Ou et al showed that EGCG from green tea lessened the inflammatory damage that LDL causes to the cells that line your arteries.

Is Green Tea Extract right for me?

Green tea extract should prove beneficial to most people. The antioxidant properties within Green Tea have been shown to help reduce LDL cholesterol, which in turn improves the health of arterial walls and thus, the heart. Such properties also provide a thermogenesis effect upon the body which helps boost metabolism, thereby aiding weight loss.

Drink to a healthy old age... with green tea: How beverage helps people stay fit
Health Article: Daily Mail

Green tea could help pensioners stay in the pink, according to a study. Those who drank the beverage stayed more physically active than their peers, researchers found. Coffee and standard tea did not provide this benefit.

Researchers tracked the health of almost 14,000 men and women aged 65-plus for three years, noting what they ate and drank and factoring in data on any care they needed. The more green tea they consumed, the more mobile and self-sufficient they were.

Those who got through at least five cups a day were 33 per cent less likely to develop a disability than those who drank less than one cup.

Three to four cups a day cut the risk by 25 per cent, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported.

Green tea drinkers fared better as they grew older even taking into account that they generally had healthier diets, lower smoking rates, were better educated and had more friends and family to rely on, the Tokyo University study found.

It is not clear why green tea gives such a boost to health. But it does contain high levels of polyphenols, plant chemicals thought to cut cholesterol and protect DNA from damage.

These are found at much lower levels in normal tea or in coffee.

However, the drink should be avoided by those taking the blood-thinning drug warfarin as the vitamin K in it can stop the drug from working properly.

YasutakeTomata of the Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine and his colleagues followed nearly 14,000 adults aged 65 or older for three years.

They found those who drank the most green tea were the least likely to develop 'functional disability', or problems with daily activities and basic needs, such as dressing or bathingPeople who drank at least five cups a day were one-third less likely to develop disabilities than those who had less than a cup per day. Those people who averaged three or four cups a day had a 25 percent lower risk.

Although it's not clear how green tea might offer a buffer against disability, Tomata's team did note that one recent study found green tea extracts seem to boost leg muscle strength in older women.

While green tea and its extracts are considered safe in small amounts, though, they do contain caffeine and small amounts of vitamin K - which could interfere with drugs that prevent blood clotting.

Green tea can slow down weight gain - even if you're already fat
Health Article: Daily Mail

If you want to ease the effects of fatty food on your waistline, it might pay to put the red wine to one side and wash your meals down with green tea. A compound in the drink, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), significantly slows down weight gain associated with a high-fat diet, a study found.

Human data (and there's not a lot at this point) shows that tea drinkers who only consume one or more cups a day will see effects on body weight compared to non-consumers, said Dr Lambert.

This is a fab product and really helps if you have IBS and a sluggish bowel, not to put too fine a point on it! It seems to have really revved up my metabolism and combined with a regular exercise programme, have slogged through those last pesky pounds, and am now at my ideal weight. Beats the hell out of drinking the recommended 5 cups of green tea a day too!!!! ..

Used alongside a healthy diet, I have found these Bioconcepts Green Tea Extract have helped me lose more weight than just dieting alone. I have also found that they have given me more energy. I wouldn't say they are a magic pill, but every little helps. ..
